PC Maintenance and Security

A little late on this posting. I choose the following tutorials, because I felt I should know more about them (and felt not as confident in this area). I viewed all of the tutorials in the "Intrusion Detection and Prevention" and I will talk about the "Explaining what intrusion detection software does" tutorial.

One thing I learned is that this goes beyond basic anti-virus, malware and basic firewall programs. This basically secures your system from potential attacks that anti-virus, malware and basic firewall programs cannot detect or prevent. This is strictly an optional program, but it is a good program to have so you don't have to reformat and reload your PC each time it becomes corrupted (coming from an IT person, I know the pain of this!). I would tell people that this prevention is simple and FREE - there are many trusted programs that can protect your system. They are WinPatrol, SpyBot's Tea Timer, and Prevx Home. A simple google search for these programs will find the secure website for downloading the program.

There were a few pieces of information that surprised me. First was seeing SpyBot still around and going strong - I remember using that in high school and it's good to see it's still in use. Secondly, I was surprised at the amount of free programs there are for this. This is both good and bad. It's good because it's available for the public to download and use on their PC for free. But it's bad because it's available for the public for free, which means people who intentionally want to cause harm to PCs can download this program, find out how to code operates and executes, and create attacks using the vulnerabilities of the free program.  One overall lesson in IT I've learned is there will always be attacks, vulnerabilities and weaknesses in systems and technology. It's how you design your backup plans, recovery, and security which will help you survive any attack you encounter.
